This project is aimed at investigating the possibility that chemical reactions involving RNA at ice surfaces took place prior to the advent of DNA-based life on Earth, and formed key chemical pathways for that transition. Tools used in this investigation include microscecond-scale Molecular Dynamics simulations of short RNA and DNA strands embedded in a quasi-liquid layer at the ice surface, as well as electronic structure calculations.
